It’s that time of the year again – South African Fashion Week!
For approximately one week, some of the country’s most celebrated designers and brands display their latest and most fascinating collections on the runway. Up-and-coming designers also join the list of artisans and the result is an eclectic mix of formidable fashion and fun. The other highlight is of course getting the opportunity to attend this bi-annual affair and for this A/W18 season, I will be flying up to join the festivities alongside Woolworths, the main sponsor of the event.
While my luggage is filled to the brim with potential get-ups, it’s my handbag that has all of the essentials I’ll need on “show day”.
First thing’s first,
What are my fashion week beauty essentials?
I make sure that the brunt of my makeup is done back at the hotel. Too much makeup and I find that with everything else that I’m carrying, my bag becomes too heavy. I have to have my Elizabeth Arden Eight Hour® Cream Skin Protectant with me. It works great as a lip balm and for any boo-boos that may occur during the day. I also never leave the hotel without the lipstick I’m wearing. When I know I have a long day ahead, I opt for matte and my WBeauty Matte Long Lasting Lipstick does the job. Another essential for me is a refreshing mist. Some fashion week events tend to have guests walking from hall, to hall, to hall. All that A/C can make one’s skin feel quite tight and dehydrated so a quick sprits of some WBeauty Make-up Setting Spray always comes in handy. And last but but certainly not least is my scent of the moment. GABRIELLE CHANEL goes everywhere with me and SAFW is no exception.
How do I glam up my look between day and night when I’m on the go?
The trick is with the eyes. A pop of black liner in my waterline and some smoked out eye shadow always does the trick. The Smashbox Always On Gel Eyeliner works phenomenally well in the waterline while the Clarins 3-Dot Liner does an impeccable job at helping me perfect my cat-eye. To limit the amount of makeup I carry, I try to always opt for a 2-in-1 eyeshadow and cheek/contour palette. A good one will have options for a daytime look as well as a nighttime look and a favourite is the Stila Perfect Me, Perfect Hue Eye & Cheek Palette. When I wear falsies (lashes), they last all day and well into the night so I know the shlep of putting them on is already out of the way. Another sprits of my WBeauty Make-Up Setting Spray for a boost of radiance is needed and I am good to go.
Which shows are you most looking forward to seeing and why?
I’m definitely looking forward to the Gert-Johan Coetzee show. I’ve also come to love Rich Mnisi, Thebe Magugu and AKJP through Woolworths and the #StyleBySA portal. There are so many designers I plan to keep an eye out for but it’s all very exciting!
What are your fashion week handbag lifesavers?
My iPhone is my best friend! Is that sad? Haha! A quick e-mail here-and-there is commonplace as most shows take place during office hours – just because I’m at a fashion show doesn’t mean everyone else is. Because of my YouTube channel, vlogging is a big part of my daily routine which means my Canon EOS M6 goes everywhere I do. A spare battery and memory card is a must in order to capture all of the amazing collections.
Moving away from tech, my Prada Cinèma sunnies take many of my outfits up a notch. Some gum, a rattail comb and some hand cream are my last-minute pop-em-the-bag items
What’s your favourite JHB hangout?
Post-SAFW activities call for a nightcap. I enjoy the San Deck Bar & Restaurant atop Sandton City. On a warm summer’s night, the bubbly goes down smoother whilst conversation with close friends remains cheerful and lighthearted.
